Approaches and Navigation
The Venetian lagoon is accessible from the Adriatic by 3 inlets (
Lido,
Malamocco
and Chioggia). The northern most entrance (La Bocca di Lido or Lido Mouth)
is the preferred approach for all passenger and pleasure boat traffic as it
provides the quickest route to Venice's historic centre. The inlet itself is
150m wide and 12m deep and is protected by sea walls which extend 2km into
the Adriatic.
Navigation in the lagoon is regulated by
several different authorities and there are a
number of rules and regulations which you should
be aware of (such as speed limits). The St.Mark's
basin in particular can become heavily congested
at times, and we advise all customers to take
special care when transiting this area. You'll
find tailor made guidelines based on the size
of your vessel in the Port
Procedures and Regulations section of this site.
Once inside the lagoon it shouldn't take more than
half an hour or so to reach the historic centre
of Venice and our berths. The links on
the right illustrate the best approach route
to the berth of your choice. Larger vessels will
require mooring assistance which can be arranged
through your agency.
Wherever possible a member of our staff will
be close on hand to ensure the arrival goes smoothly.
